Myself

My name is Sultan Somjee. I was born in Kenya and now I live in Canada. A long time ago my forefathers decided to remain Satpanthis when there were internal conflicts among us of the Khoja caste in India. Some of my close relatives decided to join the Sunni jamat and some the Ithna Asheri jamat. My community calls itself Ismailis now.

I am writing a trilogy on the East African Ismaili Khoja. It spans over the last two centuries from around 1900 to 2000. The trilogy is a fiction based on historical events. Two of the three books are published and available on Amazon. I am currently working on the third book.

You can read more about my books and also see some historical pictures here:

  1. Dear Mr. Somjee, my name is Dan Magaziner and I'm a professor of African history at Yale University. I'm working on a project on the history of design in Africa, focusing on the University of Nairobi program and elsewhere. Am I correct that you were a student in that program? A former classmate of yours, Grace Kihara, mentioned you to me. I'd be very interested in being in touch if you're willing. I'm at daniel.magaziner@yale.edu. Many thanks.
